Array-ne The matatus are on suddenly on strike. The most common of matatu is an old Nissan mini-van, normally meant to seat fourteen plus the driver. However, I’ve seen a matatu with well over 20 people crammed inside. The other type of matatu, less popular on paved roads, is the “Lunch Box.” They usually run routes on the myriad red dirt roads that criss-cross the countryside throughout Kenya, linking the heartlands together. So, when the matatu first made its debut on the Kenyan road, legend has that it cost only three Kenyan shillings to travel anywhere or “shilingi matatu”. Although now the price of a matatu ride has risen and varies on how far you want to go, it’s still the cheapest way to travel. For example, when I travel to Nairobi on business or to meet up with other PCVs, I take a matatu to Narok for 150/= and then switch to another matatu direct to Nairobi for another 200/=. Buses can take hours to fill their 60 seats, whereas a matatu usually fills its 15 seats in about 20 minutes. When in town, matatus flock at the loading area, known as a stage. In Kisumu, the third largest city in Kenya located on the edge of Lake Victoria, the stage is an enormous sprawl of parking lot with matatus that travel across the entire country. Each route has a numbering system to help the traveler know what the matatu destination is. For example, matatu number 31 travels from the Westlands (the Western edge of Nairobi) into the city center and back. Finding the correct stage and then the correct matatu is always an adventure in Nairobi, however potentially dangerous it can be. Westerners are no unusual sight in Nairobi—every other car in the city is driven by a mzungu and has red diplomatic tags—but a mzungu searching for a stage and taking a matatu is a rarity indeed. Most small town and village matatus travel only to larger towns where you pick up a connecting matatu at the larger stage. Touts are hired by the owners of the matatus to yell out the destination of the matatu and to harass people to board the vehicle. The tout usually stays in town once the matatu leaves for its destination, but he gets a cut of money from the conductor for facilitating the process of filling the vehicle. On a tarmac road outside a town, matatus barrel down at fairly regular intervals, coming and going in both directions. The coming matatu will invariably pull over and the conductor will jump out and motion for the mamas and men already seated to move over, encourage small children to stand two deep and indicate for you to jump on. I will not sit in the back seat of a matatu. One of the first times I rode a matatu, I climbed in the backseat and before I knew it, there were eight people crowded back there—five seated and three standing children. The rule of thumb among PCVs is to either ask a mama (women seem to rarely cheat foreigners on matatus) or try to figure out what others are paying by intent observation. There are about five to six privately-owned matatus that run the thirty kilometers between the towns. Often, when I walk up to the stage, I’m greeted with shouts of “Chepkemoi, today Chebole?” The owners and the men that work the matatus are intensely proud of their vans. They drive the matatu right down to the water’s edge to clean both the outside and the inside of the dried brown Kenyan mud that seems to coat everything during the rainy season.

The Hill Observer: Duke post seeks to defuse ‘88′ ad

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Array We have spent the 4th of July and Thanksgiving with their family for years, the two families gathering at my second grandma’s house. Since she is selling that house and has moved up here, there will be no more holidays at her place. My second grandma, her daughter Shari and Shari’s daughter Kat were all there, as well as my baby uncle & We had a ball visiting and got the news that Kat is engaged to her long-time boyfriend. I hope Kat will be as happy in her marriage as I am in mine. The next day, we hung out with Boot while Pie was allowed to stay home and do his own thing (play video games and eat Cheez-Its) for the afternoon. It was good to have Boot in a good mood for a switch.Sunday, my grands came by to see our apartment, then went to church with us. However, I think I am holding myself up to Brendan & Laura’s standard, which would be hard for most pastors to replicate. After church, my grands invited us to brunch.

Eighty-seven Duke professors are ticked off over the alleged misinterpretation of the 88 ad, published months and months ago.Professors don’t like to admit to being wrong. Did you ever notice that?Rather than posting a letter of apology for capitalizing on lies, a miscarriage of justice, and prosecutorial abuse to promote their agenda, the Duke professors posted a letter refusing to apologize. From The News and Observer:Dozens of Duke professors have posted an open letter to the Duke community on the Web, explaining an ad last spring that has been widely criticized as a condemnation of lacrosse players. The new letter, signed by 87 faculty and posted at www.concerneddukefaculty.org, refuses to apologize for the ad and reiterates concerns about issues of race and sexual violence on the Duke campus. It says the so-called Group of 88 ad published in the Chronicle last April has been grossly misinterpreted. That ad has been a subject of heated debate on blogs, and its signers have received angry and sometimes racist e-mail messages. The ad has been read as a comment on the alleged rape, the team party, or the specific students accused, the letter said. Worse, it has been read as rendering a judgment in the case. … We reject all attempts to try the case outside the courts, and stand firmly by the principle of the presumption of innocence. The letter was signed by concerned faculty, many of whom endorsed the original ad. The ad, entitled, What Does a Social Disaster Sound Like?, included anonymous statements by students talking about racism and sexism on the campus. The ad also thanked protesters making collective noise. The letter this week has backed off that a bit, saying, We do not endorse every demonstration that took place at the time.William Chafe, a history professor who signed both the ad and the letter, said the bloggers’ interpretation of the ad has become the version people accepted. And that’s wrong, he said. Were trying to simply set the record straight and clarify we never claimed the lacrosse players were guilty,” Chafe said.Blah, blah, blah. The “88″ ad ran in April 2006.Now, mid-January 2007, the professors find it necessary to “set the record straight”?Why the delay?Could it have something to do with the fact that Crystal Gail Mangum, Brian Meehan, and Mike Nifong has made them look like fools? The case has completely unraveled….In the online letter, concerned faculty say they wont apologize despite the fury. There have been public calls to the authors to retract the ad or apologize for it, as well as calls for action against them and attacks on their character, the letter said. We reject all of these. We think the ad’s authors were right to give voice to the students quoted, whose suffering is real. We also acknowledge the pain that has been generated by what we believe is a misperception that the authors of the ad prejudged the rape case.I understand that the ad spoke to the problem of REAL racism and sexism

-ne There are two quotes, in addition to the one tattooed on my body, that have stuck with me in my life. I could think of a million reasons one might argue that guilt can indeed, be quite productive: the Marshall Plan perhaps? Anyway, for me this quote reminds me and remedies me of my OCD tendency of letting things bother me to the point of virtual implosion. I should end the rant here, since what I really want is to refer to the second quote, but I must say the real reason I remember this quote is not because I have mulled it over so much amidst a world of more worthy quotes, but rather because I saw a little scrap piece of paper tacked on someone’s fridge by a magnet with the saying scribbled in sharpie. To this day, I don’t know why, but I remember it and I think about it and I use it and that’s it.#2 95% of life is just showing up.This is the doozy.

The domestic terminal and the international terminal are separate buildings….. There is a lack of signage telling you how to proceed from the domestic terminal to the international terminal and vice versa… On the way to the domestic terminal, you will be led through a row of counters tha flock everything….i mean everything… Upon rushing to the domestic terminal, I was directed to counter 19, China Eastern Airlines (东方航空) to get my ticket changed (as I want to catch an earlier connecting flight compared to the one which I was booked on (I can save 5 hours this way!)). I did manage to get my ticket changed and rushed to check-in counter (which has to be at the end of the domestic terminal again!)…. Going past it leads me into the domestic waiting area (of which there are 3 halls!) Hall 1 and 2 are pretty empty (why do they need 3 halls then??) And mine was Hall 3, which of course is at the other end and downstairs… Rushing again, I once again passed by fruit stalls (in the domestic terminal? only to have to wait…..for transport to the plane via a bus service(this is so 80s!) Whilst waiting, I can’t help but notice that my fellow passengers are all male and they find innovative places to spit….(a plastic pot plant with fake plastic plant next to the doors is the favourite place) I think I can write an entire blog about spitting, the act and art of spitting… The bus is interesting…(of course I took the bus earlier when I landed from the plane to the international terminal)…

Looking back on that conversation got me thinking about the way Democrats and Republicans talk about their religious beliefs. Republicans do not hesitate to talk about their faith and the way it affects their politics. On top of that, there are strong contingencies of Catholics, Protestants and Jews within our party whose political views are very much reinforced by their religious views. Perhaps it is not a matter of why Democrats do not talk about their faith, because our party has plenty of people that are religious, but more of a matter of how to talk about faith. Loving your neighbor is not just a good idea biblically, but is also prudent politics. Another way that we can learn how to reinforce our politics with faith is by looking at the religious role models in our party. president, they cannot deny the way his faith drives his politics.

-ne 41 years ago, one of the most recognizable monuments in the US, the Saint Louis Arch (pictured at left, with Busch Stadium at far left, the Old Courthouse at bottom left, from Tzongming), also known by its official name, the Jefferson National Expansion Monument and Museum, was still two triangular pillars rising into the air. Although St. Louis businessman Luther Ely Smith had convinced Mayor Bernard Dickmann to set aside land on the city’s waterfront back in 1933 and President Franklin Roosevelt created a 15-member commission to explore a US Territorial Expansion Museum a year later, it took until 1946 for a St. Louis committee to launch a design commission, two more years to select the winning architect, Eero Saarinen (who designed furniture and the Eames House with Charles Eames, and also designed the TWA terminal at New York’s John F. according to its original builders, MacDonald Construction, Inc., it is projected to stand for a millennium, and I hope it will. The same year the Arch received its closing steel section, Busch Stadium, the new home of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, also was finished, and the Cardinals prepared to move from their residence of 46 years, Sportsman’s Park, where some of their brightest lights, including Rogers Hornsby, Dizzy Dean, Franky Frisch, Paul Medwick, Johnny Mize, and Stan The Man Musial, had starred. Two years after moving to Busch, the Cardinals would win their second World Series in three years, defeating the Boston Red Sox in 7 games behind Gibson’s almost unbelievable pitching performance, and a year later, in the tragedy-drenched year of 1968, the Cardinals would return to the Series and lose to the Detroit Tigers, despite Gibson’s and Brock’s season-long and post-season heroics.I went to Busch Stadium a number of times as a child and teenager, and was there the year they finally returned to the World Series, after a long drought, in 1982.

India, noticeably, has managed to keep its run rate above 5 an over throughout, despite the loss of Sehwag and Dhoni early and cheap, and for that, the credit goes entirely to Gambhir, who has given his captain the luxury of playing the more restrained anchor knock at the other end (and ensuring he can stay through the innings, rather than being forced to take risks to up the scoring). The interesting thing about GG’s knock is, more than the assurance behind his boundaries, the fact that he got a fair few of his runs the hard way, between wickets — 45 dot balls and 43 runs taken between wickets, including 32 singles, five twos and a three is good intelligent cricket.

The historic aid package announced by the Politburo of the Plutocracy in Scotland this week will indeed provide an unprecedented level of unhindered assistance, doled out with no strings attached. Unfortunately, this largess is being dispensed to the G8’s corporate masters, not the suffering people of Africa. Bono and Geldof have been played like violins — or maybe honked like clown horns — by the Politburo, who used the pop stars’ credibility to blur the rapacious essence of their heavily conditioned compassion. Here’s yet another look at the truth behind the prancing popsters, again from the Guardian. An excerpt:While the G8 agreement commits the richest countries to increase aid and write off the debt of 18 countries, it requires developing countries to pursue a raft of free-market policies. The G8 is united behind this agenda, which Britain has taken a lead in pushing. Gordon Browns new deal talks of the poorest and richest countries “each meeting our obligations”. Poor countries obligations are to create the conditions for new investment and more favourable business environments while opening up trade. Only in return for these will rich countries provide aid and debt relief and open up their markets. One might think that countries where poverty kills thousands every day have no obligations towards the rich. But in the world of Brown and the G8, they are to help western companies make more profits by pursuing policies that have increased poverty and inequality from Ghana to Zambia… Its a cheap strategy, too - last months G7 finance ministers deal cut in aid what countries got in debt relief…The basic aim of British elites has traditionally been to help companies get their hands on other countries’ resources. Secret 1960s files state that we should bend our energies to help produce a world economic climate in which our external trade, our income from invisibles and our balance of payments can prosper. The key was to protect sources of raw materials in the Middle East and southern Africa by promoting freer global trade and increasing our efforts to open up new markets.Postwar planners never intended to allow African countries to be truly independent. After decolonisation, they sought to establish pro-western elites - like those who now welcome the G8 agreements - and impose indirect economic rule through levers such as aid. The Attlee government, which established the aid programme in 1948, drained millions from Africa to help Britains postwar recovery. Current development policies are ways to control nominally independent economies in a post-imperial world.”And again, this is a sinister coin thats paid out on both sides of the Atlantic.

No longer operating under the proverbial radar screen, they’re people who value family, limited government, self-help & responsibility & Another reason may be that the New Republicans are African Americans & Hispanics. Since only 11 percent of African Americans reportedly voted for the president, why should he nominate Justice Thomas? Three reasons can be cited: First, Justice Thomas represents the New Republicans, those who are coming & those who are returning to the party of Lincoln & A stronger economy at home will empower American capitalists to invest in research & development that further aids in creating new markets abroad. Reid’s on record from his first appearance on Meet the Press as Senate Minority Leader as saying Justice Thomas’s opinions are poorly written & even hinted at a lack of intellect on Justice Thomas’s behalf.
